Klezmerorchester workshops 2024

9–12 May and 3–5 October in Erfurt

In the first workshop, 9 to 12 May 2024, we prepare a new programme and expand on the basics of the klezmer style on your instrument, taught by professional musicians.

Sheet music is helpful, but it does not say anything about how the music is actually being played, which is why we do not send sheet music out in advance. Learning how to interpret the written music in klezmer style is one of the main aspects of the workshop. Learning by ear does also play a role, although there will be sheet music for most of the tunes.

Professional klezmer musicians teach you the basic principles of klezmer music theory and how to play it on your instrument. Our multifaceted team gives you the opportunity to get to know different approaches and musical signatures.

Klezmer music is dance music – which is why we will also learn the basics of the specific yiddish dances and rhythms.

Klezmer music had originally been transmitted orally. Our approach to teaching klezmer music today mirrors this tradition. Additionally, it encourages your individual way of interpreting music and being creative with it. After the first workshop, you will have enough time to use what you learned and rehearse for the upcoming concert on your own. During the final rehearsal, 3 to 5 October 2024, we will set the final arrangements.

Please note:
Full participation in BOTH rehearsal weekends is a basic requirement for participation in the concert. It is not possible to register for the workshop alone. Please also have a look at our BASIC IDEAS to find out which instrument sections are already complete.
